Microarrays

A microarray is a collection of specific reporter molecules (cDNA or oligonucleotides) arrayed in a micro-fashion on a solid support. Target molecules complementary to the target-specific reporter probes can bind to their matching probes on the microarray. As target molecules are labeled with a fluorescent dye, emission of light can be detected which represents the amount of target molecules present in the sample under investigation. With microarrays, the gene expression levels of thousands of genes can be measured simultaneously or hundreds to thousands of genomic regions of a genome can be genotyped. Applications of microarrays are for example gene expression analysis, miRNA expression analysis, aCGH, or ChIP-on-chip.
