MicroRNA’s (miRNA’s) are very short, biologically active RNA molecules that act as post-transcriptional regulators. They hybridize to complementary mRNA sequences throughout the transcriptome, thereby repressing translation, degrading its target, or having a gene silencing effect. MiRNA expression analysis is often performed in conjunction with mRNA expression analysis since changes in miRNA expression will directly (degradation of the target) or indirectly (gene silencing or repression of translation) change the mRNA expression levels.
